Everything You Need to Know About Josh Pastner’s Hiring for UNLV Basketball

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels welcomed their new head coach, Josh Pastner, to the Las Vegas community this past Wednesday at the Thomas and Mack Center.

Pastner, who previously coached at Georgia Tech and Memphis, has a career record of 276-187. Most of his success came during his time at Memphis, where he recorded a 167-73 record from 2009 to 2016. Under his leadership, the Tigers made four NCAA Tournament appearances, won three Conference USA tournament championships, and claimed two regular season titles. Additionally, Pastner was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 2017 while coaching the Yellow Jackets.

During the conference, Pastner stated multiple times that coaching the scarlet and grey has always been a dream of his. “This has always been a dream job for me, and I fully recognize the significance of UNLV in the landscape of college basketball,” he said.

The Athletic Director for UNLV, Erick Harper, stated, “He is a fearless and relentless recruiter with a proven track record as a head coach. He is also an exceptional communicator, deeply committed to engaging with the Las Vegas community.”

Pastner has signed a five-year contract worth a total of $4.8 million, which means he will be earning nearly $1 million per year while coaching the Rebels.

With UNLV missing its 12th consecutive NCAA tournament this past season under former coach Kevin Kruger, Pastner believes that the program can achieve success now and restore the glory days of Runnin’ Rebel Basketball.

Pastner may have to depend significantly on the transfer portal, as many UNLV players have announced their intention to enter. This includes Vegas native and star point guard Dedan Thomas Jr.

Following the press conference, Pastner mingled with fans, shaking hands and signing autographs. He also took the time to catch up with UNLV sophomore guard Brooklyn Hicks.

Pastner discusses why Las Vegas is the sports entertainment capital of the world and expresses his desire for UNLV to regain its top position.

The transfer portal is now open and will remain so until April 22nd. Pastner will start working on recruiting players and shaping the team he envisions for the 2025-26 season.
