Sabres Shut Out Golden Knights Behind Luukonen’s 27 Saves

On this St. Patrick’s Day, the Vegas Golden Knights return home looking to keep their offense rolling as they take on the Buffalo Sabres. Vegas has shown improvement over their last two games, finding their scoring touch with 10 total goals in that span, a positive sign for a team that has been pushing to regain momentum late in the season. Overall this year, the Golden Knights are averaging 3.30 goals per game while allowing 3.08, and generating about 28.6 shots per game, showing their ability to create consistent offensive pressure.

Buffalo, however, comes into tonight’s matchup with confidence after defeating Vegas 3–2 in Buffalo on March 3, proving they can edge out tight games between the two teams.  The Sabres have been one of the more dangerous offensive teams this season, averaging 3.38 goals per game while allowing 3.02, along with roughly 28 shots per contest.  With both teams capable of putting pucks in the net, tonight’s St. Patrick’s Day clash in Vegas has the potential to bring plenty of energy as the Golden Knights try to keep their recent scoring surge going and even the season series with Buffalo.

Game Recap:

Buffalo struck first in the opening period thanks to Josh Doan, who buried his 22nd goal of the season to give the Sabres a 1–0 lead. The forward — son of longtime NHL star Shane Doan — capitalized early and helped Buffalo dictate the pace of the game. Vegas generated pressure throughout the night, but their recent offensive surge slowed against a disciplined Sabres defensive effort. The Golden Knights entered the contest having scored 10 goals across their previous two games but were unable to find the back of the net.

The story of the night, however, was Buffalo goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Luukkonen delivered a stellar performance between the pipes, stopping all 27 shots he faced to record a shutout. It marked his first shutout of the season and the eighth of his NHL career, anchoring a dominant defensive effort by the Sabres. Vegas generated chances throughout the game but repeatedly ran into Luukkonen, who remained composed during key moments and preserved Buffalo’s lead.

Buffalo sealed the victory late when Josh Norris scored an empty-net goal to make it 2–0. The win continued an impressive stretch for the Sabres, who have now won nine of their last ten games and remain one of the NHL’s hottest teams since December.

For Vegas, the loss snapped a brief two-game winning streak and slowed the offensive momentum the team had started to build. Despite the defeat, the Golden Knights remain in third place in the Pacific Division and will look to bounce back in their next matchup against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night.

Post game Mitch Marner discussed on what makes it difficult to take on a goalie that is not giving up much. Marner is also one of the guys that has played against Buffalo the most while he was in Toronto and he gives insight on what has made Buffalo great as of recently.
