BREAKING: Golden Knights Fire Bruce Cassidy and Hire John Tortorella as New Head Coach

The Vegas Golden Knights have announced the release of Bruce Cassidy from his coaching duties and have immediately hired John Tortorella as the franchise’s fourth head coach in team history. Cassidy becomes the third NHL head coach to be fired this season, joining Dean Evason of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Jim Hiller of the Los Angeles Kings.

The move comes after a difficult stretch for Vegas following the Winter Olympic break. The Golden Knights have dropped 12 of their last 17 games, including six losses in their last seven contests, most recently a 5‑4 shootout defeat to the Washington Capitals. Despite the struggles, Vegas maintains a playoff position, holding third place in the Pacific Division with a record of 32‑26‑16 and 80 points.

Who is John Tortorella?

John Tortorella is one of the NHL’s most recognizable and intense coaches, known for his fiery personality and disciplined approach. Born on June 25, 1958, in Boston, Massachusetts, he had a modest playing career before turning to coaching, working his way up through the AHL and eventually leading NHL teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets. He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004, cementing his reputation as a coach who builds tough, hard-working teams.

Tortorella’s style is all about accountability, defensive structure, and high-tempo play. His teams are physical, resilient, and mentally tough, reflecting his demand for maximum effort from players. While his outspoken nature has led to clashes at times, his ability to turn teams around is undeniable. Now leading the Vegas Golden Knights, Tortorella brings championship experience and intensity, aiming to stabilize the team and instill the discipline he’s known for.

In his last stint with the Flyers, the team failed to make the playoffs in his three year tenure. In his final season with Philadelphia, he had a 23-36-9 record and was ultimately let go by the Flyers on March 27, 2025. In the meantime, Tortorella has made appearances on TV for ESPN and TNT as a analyst for broadcasted hockey games.

Bruce Cassidy leaves with Golden Legacy.

Bruce Cassidy leaves the Vegas Golden Knights with a mixed but impactful legacy. Hired in 2022, Cassidy brought a wealth of experience from his successful tenure with the Boston Bruins, where he was known for his strategic acumen and ability to develop a structured, disciplined team. In Vegas, he implemented a system-focused approach, emphasizing puck possession, defensive responsibility, and adaptability, helping the Golden Knights maintain competitiveness in the stacked Pacific Division. Under his guidance, Vegas consistently made the playoffs and developed young players into reliable contributors, reinforcing the team’s reputation as one of the NHL’s most balanced and well-coached rosters.

Cassidy’s tenure wasn’t without challenges, especially during the 2025–26 season, where injuries and inconsistency led to struggles down the stretch. Still, he leaves behind a foundation of professionalism, a strong culture, and a clear identity for the team. His legacy in Vegas will be remembered for shaping the Golden Knights into a disciplined, hard-working team capable of competing at a high level and for mentoring the next generation of players and leaders who will carry that culture forward.
