Standout Statistics
- Brent Rooker hit the first Athletics’ homer of the spring yesterday against the Rangers. He has a team-high three RBIs through five games.
- J. T. Ginn threw two innings against the Giants, allowing zero hits and striking out three.
- Before heading off to feature in the World Baseball Classic, Darell Hernaiz is off to a nice start. As he looks to earn consistent playing time at third base this season, he has five hits, including three doubles, in ten at-bats.
What Else?
- The 2026 World Baseball Classic gets underway next week. The following players in the Athletics’ organization are on the rosters to represent their country: Elvis Alvarado (DOM), Brayan Buelvas (COL), Denzel Clarke (CAN), Carlos Cortes (PRI), Max Durrington (AUS), James Gonzalez (PAN), Darell Hernaiz (PRI), Wei-En Lin (TPE), Joey Meneses (MEX), Luis Severino (DOM), Tzu-Chen Sha (TPE), Chen-Zhong-Ao Zhuang (TPE)
- Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported the club made an extension offer to Nick Kurtz. Then, Tyler Kepner of The Athletic was able to get word from the other side of the table (Kurtz) that he would be open to discussing and signing an extension with the A’s. Finding a number that works for both sides could be tricky after the slugger’s historic rookie season. His camp, justifiably, would be looking for a contract that reflects his trajectory as only going up from last season. But, the club would be putting a lot of trust in that production. If they wait until next offseason, his price could be even higher (if he’s even still willing to talk extension) if he has a huge year. Or, they could (financially) benefit from a bit of a sophomore slump, which also could make Kurtz & Co. leery about talking long-term as his value would have decreased. If they can lock him in, it would be great business to have Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, and Lawrence Butler all inked to long-term deals.
What’s Next?
The A’s continue Cactus League play today against the Kansas City Royals. Next weekend, they will make their way to Vegas to play the Los Angeles Angels in two games at Las Vegas Ballpark.
