Chiefs 30, Raiders 27: Treydan Stukes, Nakobe Dean emphasize learning and improvement after loss

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Raiders walked away from Sunday’s 30-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with plenty to evaluate, but rookie safety Treydan Stukes and linebacker Nakobe Dean both emphasized the importance of using the game as a learning experience rather than allowing the defeat to derail the team.

For Stukes, who is in his first NFL season, facing veteran quarterback Patrick Mahomes provided an opportunity to learn firsthand from one of the league’s most accomplished players.

“For me, it’s a great learning moment,” Stukes said. “Obviously, this is my first year in the league, but that’s not an excuse. It’s just an opportunity to get better.”

Stukes said he plans to study the game closely and identify areas where he can improve as the season continues.

“I’ll dive in and see what different things I can get better at and keep playing,” he said. “It’s a long season.”

Stukes also discussed the challenge of facing Mahomes and a Chiefs team that has been successful for years.

“They’re a great team, and it definitely teaches you that there are different levels at this level,” Stukes said. “He’s an elite quarterback, and there are things that he picks up on and things they’re able to do because of how good he is.”

Stukes described the matchup as a valuable experience.

“It’s a cool learning experience,” he said. “It’s cool to be in that chess match with elite competition like that.”

Chiefs’ Offensive Balance Creates Problems for Raiders

Kansas City also created problems by attacking the Raiders both through the air and on the ground. Stukes acknowledged that the Chiefs’ balance made the defensive challenge more difficult.

“They’ve got some good players over there, and they’ve done a great job with their run game this year,” Stukes said. “It’s definitely more difficult because they’re very two-dimensional. They can run, they can pass.”

Stukes said the Raiders had some positive moments defensively but acknowledged there was plenty to correct.

“I think we did okay, but obviously there are things we could have done better,” he said. “We’re going to dive into that in the upcoming weeks.”

Nakobe Dean: Raiders Must Find a Way to Improve

Dean echoed that message after the loss, emphasizing that the Raiders cannot allow the defeat to affect their approach.

“We push down on the gas harder,” Dean said. “We go harder.”

Dean said the defense must find ways to make incremental improvements each week as the team works to establish a consistent identity.

“We find a way to get that extra boost that would help us continue to get better at the end of each week and try to be 1-0,” he said.

Dean Backs Rob Leonard’s Aggressive Approach

The Raiders’ defensive players were also asked about defensive coordinator **Rob Leonard’s willingness to remain aggressive, including sending pressure in critical situations.

Dean said the defense has confidence in Leonard’s approach.

“We all trust each other,” Dean said. “The offense trusts the defense, and the defense trusts the offense.”

Dean added that the players are prepared to support the coaching staff’s decisions.

“Whatever the coaches want to do, we’ve got their back,” he said. “It’s our job to play ball.”

Raiders Defense Searching for Consistency

Dean acknowledged that allowing 27 points in the previous game and 30 against Kansas City is not representative of the defensive standard the Raiders want to establish.

“It’s still more to do. It’s still work,” Dean said. “It’s always work, and there are always ways to get better.”

“We want to not give up points,” he added. “Even though we do things well in the game, we want to hold them to as few points as possible. If the offense scores, there’s a better chance our team wins.”

For Dean, the answer is continued self-evaluation.

“Our job is to pick up what’s going wrong,” he said. “We haven’t done that in the last two weeks, so we’ve got to get better, handle our business and improve.”

No Panic Inside Raiders Locker Room

Despite the disappointing loss, Dean said he did not see the team’s confidence diminish.

“Nobody wavered,” Dean said. “It’s a tough loss. Nobody likes to lose, but I’m pretty sure everybody in here is ready to come back tomorrow and get right back to work.”

The Raiders will now turn their attention toward their next opponent, the New England Patriots, while using the loss to Kansas City as an opportunity to identify mistakes and improve.

“We’ll see what we did, what we could have done better and what we did well,” Dean said. “We’ll do a lot of self-scouting and then move on to New England next week.”

The 30-27 loss was a difficult result for Las Vegas, but the message inside the locker room remained consistent: learn from the mistakes, correct them and move forward.
