It’s Cinco De Mayo weekend, that’s a National holiday for the Boxing world. This weekend was led by Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2 39 kos) as he took on undefeated contender Jaime Munguia (43-1 34kos). Canelo took a unanimous decision in a fun fight, but one Canelo won. It was a fight that many were ok with but wanted someone else for Canelo. With that being said everyone expected it to be exciting as long as it lasted.
Munguia came to win and fight his heart out he was not there to just be there. His activity early on gave Munguia an early lead as he took two of the first three rounds. He landed a flurry at the end of round three that caused roars from the crowd.
Canelo then reminded everyone he was still that guy. Towards the end of the round Canelo landed a precise uppercut that sent Munguia crashing to the canvas. Munguia seemed shocked, but stayed composed and ended the round well. That knockdown turned the tide of the fight as Canelo just continued to be more accurate and land throughout, but to Munguia’s credit he never gave in and pushed forward.
In the end, Canelo took the victory as the action though entertaining was similar towards the end there were solid shots both ways, but Canelo’s work was just cleaner. The shots from Canelo would buzz the younger fighter, but the heart was on full display. When the scores were read Canelo’s arm was raised as the rightful winner and attention turned to one fighter in particular. David Benavidez is the name that is mentioned and the only fighter that should be given that fight. When asked about the fight Canelo said. “ We’ll see I’m gonna to take some time, but if the money is right we could fight tonight.”
Canelo vs Benavidez is the only fight that should be made and what we want to see next.
