The last Showtime main event may have birthed a new Superstar. David Benavidez (28-0 24kos) stopped Demetrius Andrade (32-1 19kos) in round six. The fight was stopped following a relentless three-round attack from Benavidez in which he out-landed Andrade 96-36. Benavidez has all but solidified his right to battle Canelo Alvarez. The fight started close here with Andrade but quickly turned.
In round three the fight may have turned. Benavidez began to put his punches together and seemed to affect Andrade in the middle of the round, ss for about a minute there were no return punches, as a testament to his heart Andrade did throw some to end the round as he attempted to slow down the damage. It was only a matter of time though as the sand in the hourglass started to drop quickly.
The fourth round is where it became a matter of time. Benavidez was beginning to land at will and landed a thunderous overhand right that sent Andrade crashing to the canvas. Andrade got up and told the ref he wanted to continue but was beginning to take severe punishment. In round five it was much of the same as you could see every punch seemed to land and Andrade looked to be fighting off instinct and heart. In between rounds the ref asked the doctor to check on Andrade and was given the ok, but the sixth was decisive. Every punch elicited a reaction from Andrade. The onslaught was nonstop, and the brave Andrade attempted to react, but his shots had no effect on Benavidez. The ref told the corner he didn’t want to see that again and that he needed a response from Andrade and the corner told him to stop it. The fight ended by corner stoppage at the end of six.
With this victory, there is nothing left to be said. There should be no discussions with anyone else and should not be any other names. Canelo needs to fight Benavidez next. Canelo is the international star and Benavidez is a star in the making. It would sell out and I believe do a minimum of a million buys. Boxing deserves this fight, the fans deserve the fight and Benavidez deserves this fight. Cinco De Mayo should bring us Canelo vs Benavidez no ifs, ands or buts about it.
