Abner Mares has injured his right elbow Friday afternoon and is now unable to fight for Gervonta Davis’ junior lightweight world title February 9th at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Now the show will progress with Davis (20-0, 19KO’s) defending against former junior featherweight world champion Hugo Ruiz .
Ruiz (39-4, 33 KO’s) of Mexico, is coming off of a January 19th unanimous decision victory over Alberto Guevara on the Manny Pacquiao/Adrien Broner undercard. Ruiz’s boxing style should make for an action packed, albeit predictably brief fight. His quick turnaround from the Guevara fight could have an impact on his stamina for this fight.
Tuesday night Davis posted a vague tweet commenting, “This is crazy,” in reference to a possible fight cancellation. Now that Ruiz has stepped up to fill in, we should still be in store for a quality fight and Vegas Sports Daily will be there to cover it.
