After a light weekend in the Sweet Science Scene, it picks up with a heavyweight title fight. Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder three takes places Saturday, October 9th from Las Vegas and it will begin a string of eight-straight weekends of big cards from the U.S. and internationally. This fight has a lot of talk and interest for fans of the Sweet Science behind the hyped lead-up that has been as big and drama-filled as the fights have been. There was still other news and yes again Fury vs Wilder three is the biggest news that will be through the week.
In England, this past weekend a card by Boxxer was due to have Chris Eubank Jr vs. Anatoli Muratov was canceled due to Muratov’s prefight medicals came into question. The fight that became the main event was David Avanesyan and Liam Taylor. Avanesyan won the fight by second-round stoppage and asked for a fight with welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas. Sweet Science fans didn’t get the main event they tuned in for, but it was good action nonetheless.
Lopez vs. Kambosos drama continues
The on-again-off-again postponement and now who knows between Teofimo Lopez, and George Kambosos has reached another level. Triller this past week stated that they would no longer carry the event after they tried to get the sanctioning body the IBF to remove Kambosos from the rankings. According to many with Triller defaulting the fight should then go to Matchroom who had the second-highest bid when the fight went to a purse bid. This has really slowed the momentum of both fighters as Lopez had won the biggest fight of his career and Kambosos had won the right to become the mandatory and now they wait even longer.
Lomachenko vs. Commey moves to December 11
According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, a fight between former light champions Vasiliy Lomachenko and Richard Commey has been agreed to for December 11th. The fight will come after the Heisman trophy presentation. It is a matchup of former champions but still is both top 10 lightweights. It will be the second fight for both following a defeat to Teofimo Lopez and one those who follow the Sweet Science will be excited to watch.
Sweet Science Quick Hits
- Middleweight title holder and undefeated Demetrius Andrade will take on Jason Quigley in a title defense November 19th on DAZN. It will be Andrade’s fourth title defense and a major leap in competition for Quigley.
- New Promotion Probellum, headed by Richard Schaefer, was busy this week with three good signings. Badou Jack former super middleweight champion and former super lightweight champion Regis Prograis, and up and comer Eimantas Stanionsis. No news on when they will fight, but this is some good pick-ups for Probellum as they forge their new Sweet Science venture
- Terrence Crawford and Shawn Porter appeared on ESPN to promote their fight on November 20th. That’s the good now the bad is that it was only about 2 minutes. A fight of that magnitude needs better promotion and I’m sure it will pick up, but that was not a good first look.
- Manny Pacquiao officially retired, and he leaves a great and legendary career. The legacy he leaves behind may never be reached and for sure the 8-division champion that he was is more than likely never going to be matched. Here’s to your retirement and have a great run in the political forum Champ.
Not to be Rueda…but
No matter the outcome of the fight on Saturday whoever losses whichever fanbase takes the loss please don’t get too crazy. Each fan base has attacked the other on social media a lot and has called each other names that I will not repeat. I understand Sweet Science fans become invested, but the off-the-top name calling is not needed so please don’t lose it too much. I will say a piece of me is waiting for the social media meltdown that will come, but I just really hope the words said and exchanged are not too bad. I’m excited about the fight and I hope we get a clear and clean outcome in this fight.
