UNLV’s Aiden Robbins rushed for three touchdowns as the Rebels took control in the second half to beat North Texas, 58-27, in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium.
Quarterback Doug Brumfield rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another for the Rebels. Brumfield also passed for two touchdowns.
Robbins, a transfer from Louisville, rushed for 227 yards on the day. Brumfield rushed for 100 yards and also threw for 211 more on 22-of-26 passing.
The Rebels (2-1) defense stopped the Mean Green twice on fourth and one deep in their own territory in the second half to preserve their lead.
North Texas (2-2) had cut the lead to 30-27 early in the third quarter, but the Rebels answered with 21 straight points to put the game away.
With the score 30-27, Brumfield capped an eight play, 75-yard drive with an eight-yard scramble for a touchdown and the Rebels took a 37-27 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Robbins scored on a 1-yard run to extend the lead to 44-27 and Brumfield completed a touchdown pass to Ricky White to make it 51-27 with 7:01 left in the game.
Late in the game, Cameron Oliver intercepted a pass and ran it into the end zone to increase the lead to 58-27
First half a close battle
The Rebels led at the half, 23-20, after the Mean Green scored the final 10 points before intermission.
UNLV took the opening drive 65 yards on seven plays, capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Brumfield to Kyle Williams. But on the ensuing kickoff, North Texas’s Kaylon Horton went 99 yards for a score to tie the game at 7-7.
The Rebels were forced to punt, but the Mean Green took a sack and another tackle for loss and were forced to punt from their own 14 yard line. UNLV’s Spencer Briggs blocked the punt, but the Rebels couldn’t recover the ball before it went out of end zone for a safety.
UNLV was forced to punt after the safety, and the Mean Green took a 10-9 lead on a 31-yard field goal by Ethan Mooney.
Early in the second quarter, the Rebels drove 75 yards on 17 plays to retake the lead on 2-yard run by Robbins. UNLV regained possession after North Texas couldn’t convert on a fourth and 1 at their own 33 yard line and Robbins took the next play 33 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 23-10.
Toward the end of the first half, the Mean Green cut the lead to 23-17 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Austin Aune to Oscar Adaway II.
After a UNLV punt, North Texas drove down to the 1 yard line with nine seconds left, but Aune couldn’t connect with a receiver in the end zone. With three seconds left in the half, Mooney hit a 20-yard field goal to close the deficit to three points at the half.
