The Las Vegas Lights FC played the Orange County FC last night in the 3rd Rd of the US Open Cup. With a chance to play an MLS Team in the 4th Rd at stake the Las Vegas Lights started the game off looking uninspired and discombobulated. The Lights had some momentary lapses of judgement and lack of communication resulting in an early 2-0 Deficit.
Orange County on the other hand looked poised and had team chemistry. They looked like they were ready for the game and were passing to their teammates before they were open. Orange County FC began the scoring with a beautiful finish off the head of Cody Shelton silencing the crowd at Cashman Field in the 6th’. Then in the 16th’ the Lights Mobi Fehr went to pass it back to Goalie Angel Alvarez. As Angel veered towards the outside the ball traveled right past him into the back of the open net to make it 2-0 for Orange County FC.
The Lights answered in the 23rd’ when Santiago Echavarria scored on a Penalty Kick. The Lights began to show some life but then another defensive gaffe led to a goal by Dakota Collins that took away any momentum the Lights had. Into the Half went a dejected lifeless Lights Team.
When the Lights came out of the Locker Room they were a NEW FOCUSED LIGHTS TEAM. The Lights Edwin Rivas 47′ started the 2nd half with a bang when he scored off a beutiful pass from Santiago Echavarria. In the 73′ Christian Torres was sent off with a Red Card when he and Cody Shelton from Orange County got into a skirmish. With the Lights down a man Junior Sandoval scored in the 85′ to tie the game at 3. At that moment it appeared as though the Lights were going to survive and advance. The roar of the crowd and the emotion of the Lights Team was at its peak.
Then the jolt from the Coffee High or the Energy drink came to a crashing halt as Blake Frischknecht silenced the crowd and sent the Lights to an early US Open Exit when he scored in the 89′. So now the Dream continues for the upset making team from Orange County FC as they finished off the Las Vegas Lights FC 5-3.
