Favorite horse to win the Kentucky Derby is scratched

Kentucky- Due to an unfortunate injury, Omaha Beach was scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to entrapped epiglottis. “I talked to Dr. Embertson and he was very happy with the surgery,” Omaha Beach’s owner Rick Porter said, via Bloodhorse.com. “He removed loose skin behind the epiglottis. It’s a done deal. It couldn’t have gone smoother.”

Coming into Kentucky, Beach was a 4-1 favorite to win it all, but since Beach had to withdrawal because of illness, the playing field has been even and betters are trying to figure out what horse to get behind.

Beach will be out for a minimum of three to four weeks, but Porter said he will be cautious with rushing the process of getting Beach racing. He wants to make sure that Beach is 100% before he even thinks about putting Beach in a race. Jockey Mike Smith was supposed to ride Beach and was disappointed that they could not compete, but wanted to make sure Beach was okay. “I’m a little bummed out, but the horse is OK and we’re going to be all right,” Smith said. “The good news is it wasn’t anything that is life-threatening.”
