Can you smell what the Las Vegas Raiders are cooking?

World Wrestling Entertainment sure can. The WWE announced last week that its popular SummerSlam event will be held on Aug. 21 at Allegiant Stadium. The event is expected to draw a capacity crowd of about 72,000 wrestling fans.

WWE is a leader in global entertainment, and to host one of it signature events in the Sport and Entertainment Capital of the World is a perfect fit. The Raiders look forward to SummerSlam and a full schedule of events and entertainment to come at Allegiant Stadium.

The event will take place on a Saturday night, which is against the norm of WWE pay-per-view event that regularly take place on Sunday evenings.

Prior to the announcement, it was reported in the Sports Business Journal that the WWE was considering Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas along with NFL stadiums in Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, New Jersey and Nashville.

Las Vegas Raiders President Marc Badain said he was thrilled to join WWE in hosting SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium in August.

“WWE is a leader in global entertainment, and to host one of it signature events in the Sport and Entertainment Capital of the World is a perfect fit. The Raiders look forward to SummerSlam and a full schedule of events and entertainment to come at Allegiant Stadium.”

Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitor’s Authority, also was excited about Las Vegas hosting such a major event. It’s part of the vision the state had when it decided to increase the Clark County hotel tax to fund the public financing to build Allegiant Stadium.

“We couldn’t be more excited to host SummerSlam for the very first time and welcome the WWE, its superstars and the WWE Universe to Las Vegas this August,” he said. “Live entertainment and sporting events are returning to the destination in a big way, and SummerSlam is the perfect addition to the Las Vegas summer calendar.”

On July 3, Allegiant Stadium will host ILLENIUM, one of the most successful crossover electronic artists today. He will perform Trilogy, a three-set concert commemorating his previous three albums — Ashes, Awake and Ascent. ILLENIUM has a new album, Fallen Embers, scheduled for release on July 16, so this show will bring closure to this trio of albums.

Rock and Roll legends Guns N’ Roses returns to the stage at Allegiant Stadium on Aug. 27, along with debut of Wolfgang Van Halen’s Mammoth.

On Aug. 1, the turf at Allegiant Stadium will get a good workout with the finals of soccer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. The United States Men’s National Team, fresh off its championship in the CONCACAF Nations League, is one of the favorites to play in the game along with their rivals, Mexico.
