New Orleans Pelican, perennial All-NBA performer and league MVP candidate Anthony Davis notified Pelican’s brass on Monday that he does not intend to sign a contract extension with the team. In NBA parlance this definitely qualifies as massive news. By telling New Orleans that he wanted to be traded, the Pelicans will basically need to trade their most prized and valuable commodity if they hope to receive any thing in return; since Davis will be able to take his trademark unibrow and unique skillset anywhere he pleases on the open market once his current contract runs out and he officially becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1st.
While this certainly didn’t come as shocking news to anyone, what was very interesting and it says here, calculated and intentional was the timing of this development leaking to the press. Davis’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports stated to sources at ESPN that his 25 year-old clients’ desire to play for a team that could win “consistently,” and compete for a championship was the driving force behind the move.
By making such a move public when they did- just 10 days ahead of the official NBA Trade Deadline- Davis’ camp seemed to be sending a message that all things being equal the ‘Brow would prefer to move on from his time in the Big Easy, much sooner rather than later. It says here that in essence, the second-most popular league in the country is yet again seeing a premier player being very particular in how his career placement plays out. The New Orleans brass for their part issued a few responses that they planned to “move according to their own timetable,” and would not bow to outside pressure as far as moving Davis, while head coach Alvin Gentry seemed somewhat confident that Davis would remain with the team, and would “play out the season” with the Pelicans. This narrative however, appears to be just entering the initial stages of a long and played out drama worthy of a Hollywood audience.
