The week in Boxing was filled with news and fight announcements. The light heavyweight division showed up again as did a referee error. A women’s boxing star keeps shining and the light has gotten brighter. Jake Paul produced a knockout of the year contender albeit against a non-boxer.

The WBA eliminator between Israli Madrimov and Michel Soro was a fight many looked at with eagerness. Soro has been a fighter who has hovered around the top 10 of 154 and Madrimov has been creating a lot of buzz, so the fans were excited to see this. Madrimov had taken the lead in this fight with more work and more activity. Soro began to come on towards the middle rounds and in round nine he had his best work.

As the final moments approached Soro was hurt by Madrimov who unloaded a barrage against the ropes. The bell sounded to end the round and Madrimov continued to throw punches and then inexplicably the referee jumped in and stopped the fight. He called it a TKO even though the majority of the punches came after the bell. Soro was in disbelief and after the people at ringside convened, they agreed to call it a TKO. The result has left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth and hopefully it gets resolved.

A light heavyweight title contest between Artur Beterbiev and Marcus Browne had some feeling an upset could be coming. Beterbiev had looked unlike himself recently and had been dealing with out of ring issues which had him not as active as he would like. Browne was his mandatory and with youth on his side it had the making of an upset. Early on the movement and activity of Browne seemed to be giving Beterbiev trouble. In round four a headbutt caused a cut over each fighter as Browne was cut over his right eye and Beterbiev suffered a gash down the middle of his forehead. Surprisingly the cut seemed to take Browne out of his game more then Beterbiev.

The action became more toe to toe which favored Beterbiev as he scored two knockdowns and wore out Browne by stopping him in the 9th. Beterbiev seemed to really get into his rhythm and helped take control of the fight. With the victory Beterbiev can move on to a possible unification match next year or a possible super fight with Canelo.

When Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez signed with Golden Boy the intention was to get him in contention for a light heavyweight title. Ramirez a former Super Middleweight champion has been calling for a fight with titleholder Dmitry Bivol. There was a deal sent out that according to Ramirez was not accepted by Bivol. Ramirez took on Yunieski Gonzalez and they brought a great fight.

Ramirez had Gonzalez in trouble early and allowed Gonzalez to get back in the fight as they both landed some hellacious shots. Gonzalez put forth a tremendous effort and showed tremendous heart. Ramirez unloaded in the 10th and the fight was stopped. Ramirez once again called for a fight with Bivol and said you cannot hide now.

Not to be a…. Rueda but

We should take some of the hate off Jake Paul. He is not fighting a real boxer yet, but he appears to take it seriously and has given a Women’s legend Amanda Serrano a big platform and allow her to get some shine. We can say Paul is a bit of a sideshow, but he is taking it seriously and he will have to take on a real fighter if he wants to continue having Pay Per View fights. I’m not a fan of the fights yet, but he delivered a show stopping knockout and again has given others a platform.
