The Raiders made some tough decisions on Tuesday, Aug. 31, to get to within the limits of its 53-man roster. The team waived 19 players, released five more, waived/injured two and placed one on the reserve/suspended list.

Some of the more high-profile players who didn’t make the 53-man roster were free-agent signees John Brown, John Carrier and Karl Joseph, all of whom were released.

Notable players waived included center Jimmy Morrissey, who was drafted in the seventh round this year, and Isaiah Johnson, a fourth-round draft pick in 2019.

Although the current list brings the Raiders to within the 53-man roster today, that doesn’t mean it will be that way in the next few days.

The Raiders have three injured players who could be placed on the short-term IR, which is set after the initial 53-man roster is set. Those players are linebackers Nicholas Morrow and Javin White and running back Jalen Richard.  Once they are placed on the short-term IR, they could bring back other players waived.

53-man roster

Five of six Raiders draft picks made the 53-man roster and no undrafted free agents made the squad, although some such as wide receiver Dillon Stoner could be added to the 16-player practice squad.

Teams can start signing players to the practice squad after waivers claims are completed by all teams, which needs to happen by 1 p.m. PDT on Wednesday.
